Multiple-response items on the CCAR-F exam

Last verified October 27, 2026. Source: Exam Guide v1.0, section 3 ("Item format: multiple-choice and multiple-response items; each item states how many responses to select").

What the guide says, and what it does not

The guide confirms two item formats and promises that each item tells you how many responses to select. It does not publish whether partial credit exists for multiple-response items. Certification programs delivered through Pearson VUE commonly score them all-or-nothing, and nothing in the guide suggests otherwise, so prepare as if you need the complete set.

Why they are harder than they look

A select-two item is really two decisions with a shared budget of plausibility. The typical construction is: two correct options that together form a complete approach (for example, an escalation trigger plus a non-trigger that looks like one), two distractors that are each the single-answer trap for one of the correct options, and one option that is simply wrong. The failure mode is picking one correct option and its near-miss twin.

A method that holds up under time pressure

  1. Read the last sentence first: "Which TWO..." tells you the count and usually the frame ("best fix", "should escalate", "design choices").
  2. Eliminate the clearly wrong option; there is nearly always one.
  3. For each remaining option, write a one-word reason it would be right. If two reasons are the same principle, one of them is the twin and only one can be correct.
  4. Check the pair against the stem's constraint. The correct pair satisfies the constraint together; a correct-plus-twin pair usually violates it ("investigate first" plus "escalate immediately" cannot both hold).
  5. Flag and move on if you are at three minutes.

Practice

The free full-length mock on MockCerts has six select-two items; the full bank raises the share to roughly one in five on the newer pool batches, and the difficulty ladder's hard tier is built from exactly the twin pattern above. Take the free mock and filter the review to "incorrect" to see your pairs.
